How To Quickly Paint Wicker Furniture
Have you ever wanted to quickly paint your wicker furniture and wasn’t sure how it will turn out afterwards. One Spring I wanted to refresh my front porch with a new look. My wicker furniture that I purchased from Walmart over 10 years ago was still in great condition. I just needed new cushions and paint to give the furniture a brand new look. First I asked myself, “Can you paint wicker furniture and how do you paint it”?
It was really simple! I really made it more difficult. with all of these thoughts in my head that it was going to be this huge mess.
The end result came out fantastic!!
You can do this too! Refreshing any wicker furniture that you would like to repaint and make brand new again.
Let me share with you each step that I took how to quickly paint wicker furniture:
- Cleaned the furniture off with the water hose. I have to say I did it the lazy way. I waited until it dried in the sun throughout the afternoon and overnight. There were still a few spots of dirt that would not come off so I used a little bit of dish detergent to clean it off using a hard bristle brush. Then rinse it off again, leaving it to dry overnight, again. Yes, lazy!
- Protect your yard or work surface with a tarp. This was one of those things that I would skip normally but regretted it later down the road. With a yard full of spray-painted patches can really be an eyesore.
- Secure any loose strands. There are several ways you can take care of those loose wicker furniture strands. Trimming the ends with scissors if they are uncontrollable and really long. Trying to feed the ends back into the furniture is a good idea if it is not as long and you can find your starting point.
- Be sure to protect your skin with gloves, wear your old shoes and a face mask. I can’t tell you how many times I had paint on my hands, arms and feet ( Once I had on flip flops).
- Find the RIGHT spray paint. Before picking out the desired color that you want to paint your wicker furniture. Be sure to pick the correct type of spray paint. After reading label after label at the store (I like to go somewhere I have lots of options to choose from. I went with the Rustoleum Double Coverage Technology Of Painters Touch 2x Ultra Coverage spray paint. The paint is a primer, it can be used on outdoor items, it is fast drying and it works on a variety of surfaces. So far it was a big thumbs up!!
- Find the perfect color. I love bright colors. Although I wanted to go with a color that was neutral, it was a pop of color and go with other color palettes in case I choose to switch up the decor on the porch. For this project, I went with the color Gloss Navy Blue.
- Great Weather. Be sure that it not on a really hot day. It could make drying a little difficult when it is too hot outside. Also, make sure it is not windy outside and it is not too late in the evening. If it is too late in the evening it does not have ample time to dry. The dew from the night air may fall and rest on the furniture before it dries leaving little bubbles in your paint job.
- Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area if you can not spray paint outside.
- Spray paint your wicker furniture. Make sure to shake your can really well before starting. Spray about 8-10 inches from your object with an up and down motion or side to side motion. Doing this prevents any spray paint drips or bubbles.
- Apply one coat at a time. Allow one coat at a time to dry before applying another coat of paint. It best to wait overnight but if you start early in the morning another coat should be ready to be applied.
- Apply a second coat of spray paint. With my project, I used about 4-5 cans of spray paint.
- Protective covering for furniture (Optional). For added protection for your wicker furniture from the outdoor elements and the spray paint from chipping.
- Decorate with chair cushions and pillows of your choice. Biglots was the choice for me because they had the size and shape that I needed. They also have coupons every now and then with their reward program. Be sure to sign up for their reward program and emails. Friends and Family day is one of my favorites were you get 20% off your entire purchase. This savings is great on large ticketed or wishlist items.
- Your All Done! You did it!
- Enjoy your newly refreshed spray painted wicker furniture!
