Our Master bedroom needed a much-needed makeover ASAP. The problem… it took way too long for me to get it together. With life, responsibilities, and distractions I put it off over and over again.
Once the room started to affect my mood and how I felt going into the room, I knew I had to makeover our master bedroom for once and for all. I wanted to feel happy, joyful, and relaxed when I came into our room instead of stressed, disheveled, tense.
Our bedroom before and after makes my husband and I happy. The room is now bright, light, and airy! I want to share some tips and ideas to get you going on your next project in your home.
Make A Plan
When planning out what you want to do in your bedroom (or any room) start with a brain dump. This is helpful to get all of your desires and ideas are down on paper. The brain dump will also allow you to figure out a way to fit in the things that you desire in your budget that you did not feel like you have the budget to do.
Look over your brain dump and create a list.
What Can You Reuse And Repurpose
Take a look around the room at what can you repurpose and reuse. This will help with your budget! Also, this will help you with saving your back! In our room, I didn’t want to have the trouble of removing furniture from the room and down the stairs. Also, our furniture was still great pieces, so I took advantage of that.
We have two dressers in our room, but to make a long story short. My husband needed a dresser years ago when Craiglist was a popular thing to do. He purchased this heavy dresser that I didn’t care too much for (with very little drawer storage) and I repainted it.
Most of the furniture in the room: Our nightstands and two dressers all needed a coat of paint. Once I painted them all with at least 3 coats of paint each, they all looked brand new.
I used the Waverly Chalk paint from Walmart to paint the furniture. I have been using this paint for years. I love that, it is easy to use and primer is not needed to paint the surface from the start.
Also that it is available without having to go to the paint counter. That is huge for me! I don’t have the time to find or wait for anyone most days to come to prepare and shake a can of paint for me. Waverly has many paint color selections to choose from.
Finding Inspiration
One of my favorite things to do is finding inspiration on Pinterest! I think everyone loves to get lost in Pinterest for inspiration and ideas.
Over a year ago my mother sent me a picture of a dresser painted a pretty blue color, with a TV hanging on the wall above it with decor on the dresser. I thought it was pretty and a really neat idea, for her to do. I did not even think that I could do it for our bedroom.
My husband had the perfect dresser that matched that inspiration picture and it desperately needed a coat of paint (and a new look).
Finding inspiration gives you a starting point and gets your creativity flowing.
Look for inspiration with a decor piece, fabric, color, creating a certain look or idea.
A light, neutral and modern farmhouse look was what I am currently liking/loving and that is what I was going for in our master bedroom.
Organizing and Decluttering
We both have some work to do in this category, especially in the clothing department! One thing that I purchased was under the bed totes for more storage. We both have 4 bins on each side of the bed for extra things.
Everything that you have should have its own space. If you haven’t touched it or went to look for it in 6 plus months…it certainly needs to be purged. I have several things that I have totally forgotten about and that means I need to get rid of them.
Have you ever put something in a drawer, basket, or bin and forgot about it. If you have not gone to look for it or missed it, give it away and bless someone else with it.
Take Your Time
I want to encourage you to take your time. I know the messy stage of getting the room completed from start to finish can be overwhelming.
In addition, some of us may have to do the project alone. Or possibly not have all of the money to complete it, have other responsibilities, or may just have to break a project down into sections. That is ok!
Personally, I have to break down a large project into sections mentally so that it doesn’t seem overwhelming. I know it can be done!
Not to mention looking at all of the tasks that need to be done from start to finish can really hinder you from even beginning the project from the start.
- Write down a plan or outline of what needs to be done in the room.
- Break down each task to be done each day.
- Plan out your day according to what is going on that day. For example: If you have an appointment to go out that day, picking up painting supplies or an item may work better for you then trying to paint that day
- If you need help in your space to paint or lift something, let that person know ahead of time and send reminders. So it will not catch them off guard if they totally forgotten and wreck your plans for the day.
- Refer back to your list. It is easy to get excitied and purchase everything that you think you may need. Once I finished my space and moved things around, that is when I realized I needed a plant in the corner (also my Mother’s advice) and a different decor item above our bed. Sometimes we just know we want something that we may see in our homes from our favorite home decor store and that is perfectly fine. I picked up a few pieces beforehand; although I had a place in mind for it. On the other hand I saw so many wonderful things in Hobby Lobby but didn’t have a clue where I would put them. So that helped with waiting until I was done with the room and saved myself money in the process.
Our place of rest should be relaxing and peaceful! With some motivation, inspiration, work, and creativity I pray that your new space brings you joy and peaceful nights of rest.
